Imagine doing surgery on a sea turtle! It has been done, and surgeries on eels, seals, and even giant clams, as well as many marine animals! Thankfully, most of what vet techs and veterinarians do are regular health checks to make sure animals in aquariums are healthy and well. Becoming a marine animal doctor isn’t easy, though. There are only a few colleges that offer special degrees for this field, so many vets have to do internships at places like aquariums to learn the special skills needed. They might need to learn things like how to anesthetize an eel (make it sleepy without hurting it) or help the animal breathe through its gills while it's under anesthesia! It can be a tough but rewarding job for anyone who loves ocean animals… and aren’t squeamish at the site of blood.
